Kia ora koutou
Welcome to the first newsletter of this term and each of the stories in this issue that represent the diversity of activities taking place at Pukekohe High School. As we reflect back to the same time in 2021 we can take comfort from all of the positive events happening around our campus this term. In the third week of this term we will celebrate Spirit Week, that in turn will help build a strong sense of connection and belonging to our Houses. Student leaders and staff have put significant time into reinvigorating what was an annual highlight up to 2019. With attendance on the first day of term 3 at 84%, it’s exciting to have a school that is much more at “normal” setting that 12 months ago.
Phase 1 of the school’s campus development plan is underway. The new turf adjacent to the two gyms should be completed by next month. This will mean that work can then begin in August on the new, two storey classroom block on Harris Street. These teaching spaces, that will probably not be complete before the start of 2024, are badly needed. The senior team are currently visiting each of our contributing schools and our Year 9 cohort next year will again be in the region of 450. This year we are able to have a full transition and orientation programme for those students new to PHS during term 4. Open Evening on 4 August is an opportunity not only for new enrolments but also for existing students to consider course selection for the following year. We hope to see many of you here on that afternoon.
Finally, it would be remiss not to mention the 1st XV win against Wesley College 15 – 8, for the first time since 1993. This would not have been possible without the significant investment of time by parent coaches and managers and in particular Brad McNaughten and Justin Wharfe who have given a huge amount to our rugby players in recent years. Thank you.
Ngā mihi,
Richard Barnett
