Te Ao Haka Wananga – Assessment

On the 30th and 31st of May Te Ao Haka students from levels 1 – 3 attended a wananga (workshop) for this subject.

The aim and goal of the two day wananga was to learn, practice and assess all students in performing multiple waiata a ringa (action songs).

Te Ao Haka is a new University Entrance approved subject, that is in its second pilot year. There are 14 kura across Tāmaki Makaurau that are taking part in this pilot.

Due to the struggles that Covid has put on all our students here in Tāmaki, our teachers decided that they would ease the pressure a little bit and bring us all together to complete our performance standards together as a rohe (district).

The first day of the wānanga was about learning words and actions. Day two we had Pūkana, which is a Māori childrens television programme, attend and film our assessments. They will also edit these and send them to our Kaiako. On this day all our teachers were able to assess and moderate together.

It was a successful wānanga, all students who attended the second day passed with nothing lower than a merit.
